Huwa lays the foundations for sustainability
A clay paver has a lifespan of 125 years
With an average life span of 125 years, brick pavers are high-performing on a scale of durability. And there is more to it than that. Clay pavers are a durable product if we look at aspects such as the consumption of raw materials, environmental standards and reuse.
Pure and natural
Clay pavers are a 100% natural product, without any artificial additives. The bricks are made from clay, a natural product and during the manufacturing process no synthetic products or chemical treatment methods are applied. This makes it impossible for pollutants to contaminate the soil.
Responsible handling of raw materials
Clay is a virtually inexhaustible resource. To mitigate the exploitation of our clay quarries, we also use raw materials that are released during infrastructure and construction projects. Out of respect for our natural environment, after we have finished quarrying in the countryside, we reintegrate our clay quarry locations to make them permanently useful.
Reuse and recycling
Brick pavers can be easily extracted and can be used again or recycled. Since the weather has little or no influence on the quality of fired pavers, the color stays the same and will not fade. Many clay pavers also have a good quality which will sustain longer than a human life. Because bricks only consist of natural raw materials, they have no harmful side effects when they come into contact with ground or surface water.
Clean and energy-efficient production
All HUWA business processes are based on durability. We use energy-efficient tunnel kiln ovens and we reuse the heat from the ovens in our drying rooms. Additionally, we produce our own energy through co-generation. During the manufacturing process, we use the minimum amount of groundwater. We are able to do this because we collect our own rainwater and use it as process water. All the process water is reused in a closed circuit, which means we do not need to discharge any waste water. We bake our bricks using natural gas: the cleanest and most environmentally-friendly fuel. The combustion gases are purified by using flue gas filters, allowing our emissions to remain well below the statutory standard.
Minimum of packaging materials
Packaging materials are limited to a minimum. For the pallets we exclusively use untreated wood. On the pallets, the bricks are held together by a very thin, yet strong foil. All HUWA packaging materials represent less than 1% of the weight of the packaged bricks.
Our commitment to sustainability also means that we wish to establish lasting relationships with our employees and with you, our client or chain partner. We are committed to achieving this in every aspect.
